Self Defense in West Haven, CT
To most people, the words “self defense” conjure up a wide array of violent mental images. People think of boxing matches, karate films and no-holds-barred street fights. In actuality these images completely misrepresent the essence of what self defense really means. To defend oneself does not necessitate an act of violence.
Self defense is a broad category that encompasses a variety of methods and approaches to dealing with an attack. At Assembly of the Martial Arts Academy, we embrace all the meanings of the words “self defense” and our teachings reflect this broader approach.
Assembly of the Martial Arts Academy does not advocate violence. While in some attack scenarios violence is necessary, Assembly of the Martial Arts Academy promotes defense methods that emphasize keeping you safe, which often means deescalating a dangerous situation before an attack can occur.
At Assembly of the Martial Arts Academy, we’ll teach you all the methods, explore various scenarios and the right way to defend yourself in almost any situation. Our model is to always shy from an altercation but also be prepared for one.

My grandson has been going to Assembly of Martial Arts in West Haven, CT for about 3 years now. He just entered his first karate tournament and came home with two trophies. His courage, stamina and self esteem can only be accredited to this wonderful karate school. Classes for children starting at age 3!
Our now 5 year old has been involved with AMAA since he was 3, in the Little Dragons classes. There aren’t many year-round activities for that 3-5 age group, so karate is an awesome option. He adores all of his instructors, and looks forward to going to each class. Highly recommended!
Highly qualified, friendly, & professional
Assembly of the Material Arts Academy is dedicated to teaching mixed martial arts with a focus on fitness and self-defense. My son has been attending classes since he was 3, now 9 and a first degree black belt. He is always highly motivated with training with the very well trained sabunim. Teaches discipline and awareness while providing a great workout and fun environment.
A Great Place to Study the Martial Arts
My son began martial arts training with AMAA in 1st grade as part of our ADHD management plan. He started in the after school program coordinated by Park Rec once a week, then joined the summer program. That autumn he started training full time, 3 times a week. Upon earning his brown belt, he started helping out with the Little Dragons as a way to give back. Now a black belt, my son shows control, a positive attitude, and compassion for others. The Sabunims at AMAA are excellent role models who clearly care for their students. My son is also hearing impaired, and they have made modifications to their instruction to make sure they speak to his "good" side and repeat directions if needed when it appears he did not hear them. I would definitely recommend AMAA to another parent considering signing a child up for martial arts training.
This is the only activity my daughter ever stuck to without complaining! She's been involved for five years. She likes all of the Sabunims, respects them, and has developed confidence over the years. She is fifteen years old. More importantly, I like the Sabunims, too. They are patient & always encourage the kids, telling them that can learn at their own pace & it's okay if they take a long time to advance. The importance is on learning the correct way to do things. Quality. Additionally they are very good at redirecting the children who might otherwise be wandering, goofing around, etc. They don't harshly reprimand. They are polite to the children & are quickly able to get them back on track. I like the talks about bullying & what to do. Before school starts in Sept., they remind kids to work hard in school. They talk about Halloween safety. This is, in my opinion, a very good environment for children to spend time. I feel very lucky that we came across this studio!
My son doesn't like to do any, but he loves going to karate. He has a hard time dealing with making mistakes. The Sabinums are very patient with him and help him work through it. They give him individual attention to make sure he knows what and how to do the moves. They also take time to ask him how things are going at school and home and help him deal with any issues he may be having outside of class. I can't say enough good things about them.
